For all the mystery surrounding the nature of the first McLaren Ultimate Series, the car was unveiled rather unceremoniously at midnight last night. And, well, it’s named after a dead man. But what a man! The all-new McLaren Senna is the “ultimate” car in every way, offering unrivaled performance on both road and track.  At least that is the pitch. The spec sheet is not particularly overwhelming. McLaren Senna has only 800PS (789bhp) and 800Nm (590 lb ft) to play with, which by the standards of today’s hypercars is not that impressive. But this thing is a racer at heart, and as such it does not rely entirely on power for speed. The Senna puts a premium on lightness, focused and sophisticated chassis, and advanced electronics. That is why it could potentially beat all the other hypercars, and some race cars, at a circuit race. Think of this car as the ultimate 720S. [embedded content] Weighing at 1,198kg (2,641lbs), the modern-day McLaren F1 boasts a power-to-weight ratio of 668PS-per-tonne, which is the real key to its performance. McLaren Senna features carbon fibre chassis and body panels, a mid-mounted twin-turbo V8 engine with no electric assistance, race-derived suspe

You were driving the kids to school that morning when you heard a sharp Whack in front of you. The sound is enough to quiet the kids in the back seat and one of them even asks quietly, “Did somebody just shoot at us?” After your heart settles back down into your chest, you realize you’ve just been hit with a rock and now you’ve got a glittering divot at eye level in your windshield. This frugal method with help you pinch those pennies and save yourself from having to replace the whole windshield. First inspect the hole in the windshield Carefully inspect the damage. If it is not very deep and you don’t feel sharp edges when you run your fingers over it, it probably doesn’t need a professional to fix or replace it. If you realize it’s deep into the inner resin of the second layer, then you may want to consider doing your research and hiring a professional. Or if the crack goes all the way through the three layers of glass and you can feel a breeze whistling through when you are at speed, then consider using the Auto Glass Guru to replace the windshield. Otherwise, you will be able to easily repair a small hole and save yourself a significant amount of money. Before you star

Feast your eyes on what is perhaps the ultimate version of the lovely MX-5, at least before you go aftermarket. The new Mazda MX-5 Z-Sport is a limited edition of just 300 units for the United Kingdom. It boasts not just special exterior and interior appointments, but also the best engine Mazda has to offer for this car.  And it starts at £25,595. The power is complemented with a limited slip differential, Bilstein dampers and a strut brace. So to drive, the Z-Sport is significantly sharper than its non-Z brethren. The new 17 inch BBS wheels also help with this. The black rims are part of the exclusive appearance package for the Mazda MX-5 Z-Sport. We really did not think that something like the Maybach G650 Landaulet could possibly have a rival, but we were wrong. In our defense that is such a niche vehicle, no one would be inclined to invest in making such a thing… no one except the eccentric visionary Afzal Kahn, it turns out. He has just teased the Kahn Flying Huntsman 6×6 Soft Top which is a direct attempt at the Landaulet’s life.  On the face of it comparing a wonky Land Rover, which is what Kahn Flying Huntsman 6×6 Soft Top is based on, to the unique Mercedes G-Class, which is what the Maybach G650 is based on, seems idiotic. Of course the Mercedes is a superior product. But you see, the Hunstman is no ordinary Land Rover. It is a completely bespoke car, every part of which is improved and when necessary redesigned from scratch by Kahn artisans. Granted, it still may not be as spacious or as comfortable as the big G, but calling it just as classy and luxurious is not stretching the truth. There are obvious advantages with Kahn Flying Huntsman 6×6 Soft Top as well. For starters, it’s a 6×6 whereas the G650 has only, I mean only, four wheels. The British car also seems to have a much neater folding soft top than

When one talks of robotics in the context of automobile production, one invariably thinks of the ungainly metal arms busily swinging from side to side on the assembly line, welding and bolting and putting bits of a car together. But there is an other side to the relationship between car makers and the field of robotics, one that is much more sophisticated and, at least for now, entirely Japanese. If you have been to one of those big technology shows such as CES in Las Vegas, you have noticed that while some of the big European auto brands turn up with a new infotainment system they are way too proud of, the Japanese manufacturers, namely Honda and Toyota, quietly wow the crowd with their humanoid robots, capable of walking and talking and interacting with people. Now, one might wonder why should a car maker care about humanoid robots, or the this aspect of the robotic sciences, at all. And that is the question here. Why are Honda and Toyota investing so much in these things and keep coming up with ever more sophisticated, ever more human-like, machines? And are other car makers missing out not taking part? It appears the Japanese are not content with replacing human worker

Jut as the resurrected Alpine A110 gears up to hit the market with the Premiere Edition news emerges that there is an even more awesome version of the sports car in the works. It’s called Alpine A110 Sport and as befits that name it is lighter, tighter, and more powerful.  Wheres the regular A110 is a sports car for every opportunity, in that it is a brilliant all-rounder, the upcoming Alpine A110 Sport will be more focused on speed and performance. Code-named ‘Sport chassis’ at Alpine, the car will get a tweaked version of the 1.8 liter turbo four-pot that powers the standard model with 300 horsepower. It should, in theory, enables the Sport to make 60 mph from standing still in about four seconds. [embedded content] It remains to be seen how Alpine engineers are going to achieve their goal of lightening the already featherweight A110. The word is they want to slash another 50 kg off the dry weight of the A110, mostly by taking away interior trim and garnish. They will also stifen the suspension by about 20 percent. These changes would make the Alpine A110 Sport a tad less comfortable than the regular model and not suitable for daily driving. But on the upside it will inc

The highly anticipated electric crossover by Jaguar has been to America recently where it completed a road trip along California’s West Coast to prove it is almost ready for production. The Jaguar I-PACE is finalizing its range and durability tests  ahead of an early 2018 reveal.  The road trip was planned for the production prototype Jaguar I-PACE after a fan asked the company if the EV all-rounder would have enough range to complete her favourite road trip along California’s West Coast. They took this as a challenge and set out to prove it would be a breath for the I-PACE. The results were promising as the vehicle covered the 200 miles from Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, to Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, on a single charge of its advanced Lithium-Ion battery. The road trip was part of 1.5 million miles and 11,000 hours of road tests and evaluations completed by more than 200 production prototypes so far. [embedded content] Ian Hoban, Jaguar Vehicle Line Director, said: “After 1.5 million global test miles, the I-PACE is ready for production and is proven to deliver long distances on a single charge. Jaguar’s first battery electric vehicle will also be fast to charge; our ta

Lack of big power is one of the characteristics of the Mazda MX-5 sports car. It’s deliberate, so as to make you work the engine and gearbox and find the intrinsic joy there is in that. But some people prefer more get up and go and for them British tuner BBR has a new turbo upgrade package that breathes more life into the MX-5’s tiny little heart.  BBR Mazda MX-5 ND Stage 1 turbocharger upgrade for the 1498cc SKYACTIV-G engine ups the power to 210 bhp which is a staggering 81 bhp more the standard. It also bumps the torque 197 lb.ft of torque (86lb.ft more than stock). The col thing about this upgrade is that the real torque still kicks in at fairly high rpm (above 3,000 rpm, peaking at 4,100 rpm). So you still get to rev the nuts of that motor and wring it out through the snappy gearbox. The key aspect of BBR Mazda MX-5 ND turbo upgrade is the tuner’s exclusive TSX28-67R twin-scroll turbocharger. It comes with bespoke casing,  front-mounted air to air intercooler,  a high-flow K&N induction system and BBR’s renowned Starchip / EcuTek RaceRom ECU software package, which includes revised fuel, ignition and boost calibration. The turbo boot in stage 1 treatment is set a

It is said that the loudest thing you hear in a Rolls-Royce is the ticking of the bespoke clock. That ought to make it a perfect place to record music, apparently. That’s what they’ve been up to lately, lending a new 2018 Rolls-Royce Phantom to British rapper Skepta to record a song in.  Not only does this latest publicity stunt put the quietness of the car in perspective, it also promotes what kind of clientele Rolls-Royce is after these days. Gone are the days when only the exceedingly refined aristocracy drove this make of automobile, or rather were driven in. These days the real money is in the hands of artists like Skepta, or rather these are the wealthy ones with an insatiable desire to blow their cash on fancy, shiny things. The refined and the sophisticated are now fond of discreetness and understated style. [embedded content] At any rate, the Mercury Music Prize and MOBO award-winning musician Skepta, inspired by the unique ambiance of Rolls-Royce Phantom, conceived and recorded a track while sitting in the car. The Skepta RR, as the record is called, came out clean and crisp, thanks in no small part to the Phantom’s aluminium spaceframe, more than 130kg of sound
