With the world premiere of the all-new 2019 Mercedes G-Class set for the Detroit Auto Show in January, the German automaker is giving us a Christmas treat. They have released a bunch of photos completely revealing the SUV’s interior design. And it’s a fine blend of old and new, incorporating the current design themes of Mercedes-Benz into the unique shape of the G-Wagen‘s upright dashboard.  To be honest an upgrade to the big G’s cabin was long overdue. They did give it a new steering or a fancy screen now and then, but the overhaul that comes with the 2019 Mercedes G-Class is a real improvement in terms of design and ergonomics. There is more space in the new cabin, more luxury and comfort features, and fewer sharp edges that could seriously hurt you in the event of an accident. The main highlights include a new dashboard, instrument panel and center console in line with other Mercedes products of this era, plus new steering wheel, infotainment screen and seats. The iconic features, such as the grab handle in front of the passenger or the chrome-highlighted switches for the differential locks have been preserved. Just out of the blue Mercedes-Benz decided to release the first official photos of the 2018 Mercedes A-Class after a preview event in Germany. These photos, mind, show only the interior of the new premium hatchback. But at least they reveal the interior in full. And it’s pretty cool.  Having a unified corporate look might such as Mercedes and all the other major automakers have does make the cars of a certain brand look pretty much identical. Well, it seems that the supremacy of the smug Porsche Panamera Turbo, which has long been the fastest, wildest, most vicious sports sedan, is at an end as the new Alfa Romeo Giulia QV (Quadrifoglio Verde) kicks its Teutonic bottom around the Nurburgring. The Italian car set a lap time of 7:32s which is six seconds quicker than the Porsche. The Alfa Romeo Giulia QV setting the record was driven by the company’s ace test driver Fabio France and it was equipped with the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission, proving once again that the manual transmission is a thing of the past. For comparison, a manual QV set a record of 7:39. You have to forgive us for ripping off old man Hemingway for the title of this post because in some ways the Alfa Romeo 8C in these photos reminds us of the character in The Old Man and the Sea. Just look at it sitting there staring the sea in the face, braving the cruelties of a world that no longer pays any attention to it. No, these days it is the young man, the carbon-thin Alfa 4C, that is the center of attention. Cars like Alfa Romeo 8C are there with the dinosaurs, what with their rubbish engineering, wasteful engines, and imprecise handling. Monterey Car Week and Pebble Beach Concourse are quite possibly the world’s most prestigious motoring events.
