McLaren Special Operations (MSO) is not just about making one-off hypercar for the ultra-rich.They are also in charge of coming up with cool options and accessories for the moderately wealthy who can’t afford anything better than a McLaren Super or Sports Series. The latest series of MSO Defined options cover the Sports models.  That includes 570S Coupe, Spider and 570GT which in this treatment get a number of really awesome features not available with the regular options list. The first item on the new MSO Defined is a Black Pack which replaces the standard-fit Dark Palladium grey components, including front splitter; front aero blades; side skirts and side air intakes; door inserts; rear diffuser; rear spoiler and rear bumper. The package also includes a Nano Black Exhaust Finisher which can be ordered along with the new Titanium SuperSports Exhaust. That exhaust system is another highlight of the MSO Defined package. Available for the 570S Coupe, 570GT and 570S Spider, the Titanium SuperSports Exhaus results in a crisper, sportier noise, and it is also 11lbs (5kg) lighter than the standard unit. Not to be outdone by American car makers who auctions their special models left and right for charity, McLaren sent a super special 720S to the Naples Winter Wine Festival (NWWF). This one-of-a-kind McLaren 720S MSO raised the goodly sum of $650,000 for the Naples Children & Education Foundation.  The one-off McLaren 720S MSO auctioned at the event is one of the nicest examples of the supercar created to date by McLaren Special Operations. The highlights of the car include a Nerello Red exterior paint finish (named after the Nerello Mascalese grape from the Mascali area of Castaia, Sicily); a Saddle Brown with Nerello stitching leather interior; and a custom steering wheel featuring leather and Carbon Black leather grips. And as if all that wasn’t enough to let you know you are in the presence of something unique, they have fitted it with grape motifs featured throughout the vehicle and a bespoke dedication plate. McLaren’s partnership with the Naples Winter Wine Festival is in its second year. Ordered by McLaren Newport Beach, US market’s largest McLaren retailer, the 10 McLaren MSO X models have been delivered to their buyers in Las Vegas. Created by McLaren Special Operations unit to emulate the spirit of the 570S GT4 race car, the X bunch come with liveries inspired by McLaren F1 GTR race car of the 90s. Now, normally it would be really uncool to have your car painted in motorsport liveries if you don’t want to use it exclusively on the race track. But in the case of the McLaren MSO X that’s alright because of the prestigious badge of the car. Granted, you still have to explain to people what those graphics on the exterior mean and by which legendary endurance racer they are inspired. But the buyers of the X are going to get plenty of admiring nods from car geeks on the street. Besides the racing look, McLaren MSO X models also get a GT4-based get a pylon-mounted rear wing with nearly 100kg of extra downforce, functional ‘goose neck’ carbon fibre roof snorkel borrowed from the F1 LongTail, front dive planes, an MSO Titanium Super Sports Exhaust, Pirelli P ZERO CORSA tyres and a 570S GT4-style bonnet with specially constructed air intake. Elon Musk’s fascination with Mars is legendary. The man is obsessed with conquering the red planet, and has even come up with a, theoretical, plan to nuke it, so that it might become more habitable for humans. That may be a bit too ambitious, but Elon can do other things to leave his mark on Mars. And apparently the mark he wants to leave there is his red Tesla Roadster.  The cherry red first-gen Tesla Roadster is space-bound inside one of Musk’s Falcon rockets – how cool is that? The guy has his own space rockets! – replacing the “concrete or steel blocks” usually used as simulated mass for test rockets. The car is going to be “on a billion year elliptic Mars orbit,” playing David Bowie’s Space Oddity all the way. That is, of course, if the rocket “doesn’t blow up on ascent.” This is a special occasion not just for space guys, but car guys as well. And yes, of course, it is also an achievement for humanity on the whole to have a man-made object in Mars’ orbit for practically eteity. You know, it seems that the sole purpose of revealing the new McLaren Senna Ultimate Series was to make people eat their heart out. I mean, here’s a super expensive car that nobody could afford anyway, and they tell us they have already sold all 500 production units of it. Not only that, they’ve even auctioned off the very last one for charity.  Now, normally we feel a tinge of jealously wash over us when we hear about this limited edition hypercars. This time though, we’re OK. You can keep your McLaren Senna those 500 who bought one. We don’t know whether it’s the looks or the fact that it’s yet another incredibly fast supercar or blah blah blah. But we just don’t fancy this thing. If we had 750,000 GBP – which is what a Senna has cost its owners – to spare, we would not spend it on this car. For all the mystery surrounding the nature of the first McLaren Ultimate Series, the car was unveiled rather unceremoniously at midnight last night. And, well, it’s named after a dead man. But what a man! The all-new McLaren Senna is the “ultimate” car in every way, offering unrivaled performance on both road and track.  At least that is the pitch. The spec sheet is not particularly overwhelming. McLaren Senna has only 800PS (789bhp) and 800Nm (590 lb ft) to play with, which by the standards of today’s hypercars is not that impressive. But this thing is a racer at heart, and as such it does not rely entirely on power for speed. The Senna puts a premium on lightness, focused and sophisticated chassis, and advanced electronics. That is why it could potentially beat all the other hypercars, and some race cars, at a circuit race. Think of this car as the ultimate 720S. The highly anticipated electric crossover by Jaguar has been to America recently where it completed a road trip along Califoia’s West Coast to prove it is almost ready for production. The Jaguar I-PACE is finalizing its range and durability tests  ahead of an early 2018 reveal.  The road trip was planned for the production prototype Jaguar I-PACE after a fan asked the company if the EV all-rounder would have enough range to complete her favourite road trip along Califoia’s West Coast. They took this as a challenge and set out to prove it would be a breath for the I-PACE. The results were promising as the vehicle covered the 200 miles from Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, to Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo, on a single charge of its advanced Lithium-Ion battery. The road trip was part of 1.5 million miles and 11,000 hours of road tests and evaluations completed by more than 200 production prototypes so far. When you are as big and as respected as McLaren Automotive is right now, you can make up with color that isn’t special at all, put a fancy name on it, and charge people a lot of money for the privilege of having it. That is pretty much the deal with the latest McLaren MSO color, Muriwai White. Conceived by Bruce McLaren’s daughter Amanda, Muriwai White has no doubt a cool backstory. Muriwai is the New Zealand coastal community where Bruce McLaren won his first motor race at the age of 15 and the name chosen for his family house in England that was painted in a blueish white colour. That’s all great, but to look at it you wouldn’t call this shade anything but plain old white.
