Mercedes AMG GT R Roadster Is What We Want for Christmas

No seriously, we’re expecting Mercedes-Benz to confirm the roadster version of the AMG GT before the new year. Prototypes of this car have already been sighted in Germany. What we want is for those prototypes to be the test mules of the Mercedes AMG GT R Roadster.

But of course, the chances of that happening are close to nought. It takes Mercedes a long while to make up their mind about the roadster version of the regular GT — and even that has not yet been confirmed — so the idea of a Mercedes AMG GT R Roadster is just too outlandish to be anywhere on the horizon, at least for now.

It doesn’t make much sense, either. The GT R is a hard-core, track-focused version of the AMG GT and having a roadster version of it is like having a roadster version of the Porsche 911 GT3. It just doesn’t seem right. The soft and cuddly AMG GT S seems like a better candidate for this treatment, seeing as that car is tuned more for a comfortable cruise than tearing around race tracks.

That said, we have always admired AMG for how mad they are. So it won’t come as a surprise to us if they come up with a production Mercedes AMG GT R Roadster for those who want a bit of wind in their helmets as they tackle the Green Hell.
