One of the good things about electric cars is that they have compact and modular underpinnings, which means you can take the same chassis and powertrain and bolt them to many different types of bodies without too much hassle. That’s probably why Elon Musk is entertaining ideas about a Tesla Pickup Truck.
It is of course doable and, given what the genius of the man and the immense capabilities of his engineers, Musk’s Tesla Pickup Truck would be a damn good one, too. But there is a fundamental question here and it’s this: who is this for? A big electric truck with decent performance is certainly not going to be cheap, so who’s going to buy this thing if Tesla builds it? How many builders and ranchers and plumbers you know rich enough to afford something like this?
At any rate, should Tesla decide to go ahead and build the pickup truck, just as an experiment, there is a good chance the vehicle will look something like this. This excellent rendering by the guys at TopSpeed show a tall and muscular pickup truck designed with Tesla’s signature design features in mind, and we have to say it does look pretty interesting. It would be the perfect ride for the Beverly Hillbillies.
