The old German brand Borgward, revived a couple of years ago with the help of Chinese investors, has come up with an ambitious new crossover SUV. The Borgward BX5 Plug-In Hybrid is one of the first cars in this segment to get an advanced powertrain like this.
So the name and the technology are German, but the looks are distinctively Chinese, which to be frank could put off customers everywhere but Chine itself. That’s a problem because they are pitching Borgward BX5 as a global model, and it does have interesting specs. But the design is less than savory.
Have a close look at it in the launch film below followed by official pictures:
As for the technical specs, Borgward BX5 Plug-In Hybrid measures 4.48 metres in length and with a wheelbase of 2.68 metres, it seats five adults, and has a plug-in hybrid drive with internal-combustion engine and electric motor. The drive system is an electronically controlled, permanent all-wheel drive, handling a total of 258 horsepower (143 + 115). The BX5 is a near-production prototype at the moment, so these figures are preliminary figures, but they are are looking good.
