You may have heard about Rolls-Royce’s Great Eight Phantoms exhibition set to go live at Bonhams from 29 July to the 2 August. This exhibition is going to feature some amazing cars such as Field Marshal Montgomery’s Phantom and now this, the wonderfully crazy John Lennon Phantom V.

The legendary rock-star John Lennon took delivery of this Phantom on 3 June 1965. It was a pristine Valentine Black Phantom V decked out lavishly with rear seat that converted to a double bed, a television, telephone and refrigerator were installed, along with a ‘floating’ record player and a custom sound system (which included an external loud hailer). Two year’s later, at the end of recording Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, John decided it was time to indulge in his eccentric millionaire fantasy and sent the Phantom V to Surrey coachbuilders, JP Fallon, for a new paint job.

And this was the result, featuring a – for the time – psychedelic paint work which actually reflected the cover of the album with yellow background, a floral Romany scroll design, as used on gypsy caravans and canal barges, with a zodiac symbol on the roof. This car has had a truly rock-star life, ferrying Lennon and his band mates to receive their MBEs and seeing service with other rock stars such as Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan and The Moody Blues. n 1977, after a period in storage, it was donated by billionaire Jim Pattison to the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, where it currently resides.
