Gallery: Mercedes AMG GT R at Goodwood

As I’m sure you know, the new Mercedes AMG GT R made its debut amid much fanfare at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. So it is only fitting to catch up with it in action on the famous hill and have a look at the R in some excellent live photos that allow us to examine that peculiar body kit up close and decide how we feel about that AMG mango green paint job.

Packing 575 bhp (585 PS) generated by a 4.0 liter bi-turbo V8, the Mercedes AMG GT R is the track-focused version of the sports/luxury coupe and it is developed entirely at the Nurburgring. The car comes with a bespoke aero kit designed for more downforce as well as better cooling, track-tuned suspension and brakes, sticky tires, lightened construction, and a new rear-wheel steering system. In other words, Mercedes-Benz studied a Porsche GT3 and decided they want to copy all of its innovations.

Being an AMG Merc, though, the AMG GT R is bigger, louder, and in straight line quicker than its fellow German sports car. The R makes 100 km/h from 0 in 3.6 seconds and can reach reach 320 km/h (198 mph).

Along with the Mercedes AMG GT R, Daimler also brought to this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed the new Mercedes-AMG S 63 Cabriolet and Mercedes-AMG C 63 S Edition 1 Coupe, 2014 MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS  F1 W05 Hybrid, the new Mercedes-AMG SLC 43 and SL 63, the S 500 Cabriolet, and a number of vintage models including 300 SLS, W 125 Silver Arrow from 1938, and the W 25 from 1936.
